What is an MCP server?
MCP is the standard that lets AI assistants use real software. Here is what that means without the jargon.

Short answer
An MCP server is a small program that lets an AI assistant such as Claude use your tools and data in a controlled way. Instead of the AI guessing, the server publishes a list of actions it may call, such as look up a customer or create a quote, and you decide what each action is allowed to touch.
MCP in one picture
Think of three parts. On one side is an AI app, such as Claude. On the other is your system: a CRM, a database, a browser or a folder of files. In the middle sits the MCP server. It tells the AI app what it can do, passes each request to your system and returns the result. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, and it is an open standard, so one server can work with many AI apps.
MCP vs API
They are not rivals. Many MCP servers sit on top of an existing API and expose only the parts you choose.
| API | MCP server | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Programmers | AI models |
| How it describes itself | Documentation for humans | A machine-readable list of tools with descriptions |
| Who decides what to call | Your code | The AI model, within limits you set |
| Reuse across AI apps | Each needs a custom integration | One server works with many compatible apps |
What MCP servers are used for
- Letting an assistant look up and update records in a CRM
- Querying a database with plain-English questions
- Giving an agent a browser, so it can operate web apps that have no API
- Running automated tests of a web app
- Connecting an agent to files, calendars and messaging
Security basics
- Give each tool the least access it needs
- Start read-only and add write actions one at a time
- Require human approval for sending, paying and deleting
- Log every call so you can see what the AI did
- Never put passwords or keys inside prompts
Do you need one?
If you only want to chat with an AI, no. If you want an AI to work inside your own software, a server like this is usually the cleanest way to give it safe, limited access.
Frequently asked questions
What does MCP stand for?
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard for connecting AI applications to tools and data.
Is MCP only for Claude?
No. Claude supports it, and it is an open standard supported by a growing number of AI apps and agent frameworks.
Is an MCP server the same as an AI agent?
No. The agent is the AI that decides what to do. The MCP server is the set of tools the agent is allowed to use.
How do I get an MCP server built?
Pick one system and a few read-only actions to start. A freelance developer can build a first server in days to a couple of weeks, then add more tools as trust grows.
